As the only student-run medical clinic in Houston, we provide high-quality healthcare to our patients and meaningful education for our volunteers. HOMES Clinic is a program of Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston (HHH), a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), in collaboration with various Houston-based medical and pharmacy schools. Our services are entirely student-managed with oversight from attending physicians and licensed pharmacists.

unstable housing is a public health issue

People experiencing unstable housing are not only at a higher risk of contracting communicable diseases, like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and tuberculosis, but they are also at a higher risk of suffering from the preventable consequences of untreated chronic illnesses, like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease — the National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates at a rate three to six times higher than the general population. Moreover, this vulnerable population is exposed to an unstable environment, particularly putting them at risk for violence, substance use, malnutrition, and mental health issues.

  • people experiencing unstable housing are likely to die 12 years sooner than the general population

  • over 3,200 people are currently experiencing unstable housing in the greater Houston area

  • over 45,000 people have accessed services like housing, clothing, food assistance, & healthcare prevention

  • meet a patient

In 1989, Joe Benson was a chef. Then, he was was hit by an uninsured and reckless driver. He lost both his legs from the knee down, then his savings, and then his home. He says HOMES clinic “saved [his] life” during his five-year experience with unstable housing. Joe eventually started working for the service organizations that first helped him get off the streets, and he has since risen to become a Community Health Worker at HHH and a national leader for social justice and health equity.

  • meet a volunteer

Madisyn Cox is a collegiate athlete & world champion swimmer. Now, she is also a medical student here in Houston who is passionate about dedicating her time to HOMES Clinic. After actively seeking ways to get involved, she has supported HOMES Clinic in expanding our presence beyond the clinic through an invigorated social media presence and by spreading awareness about our cause throughout the Houston community, serving as a perfect example of the impact our volunteers can have.
